NOTE

LIVESTOCK REPRODUCTION

Livestock reproduction refers to the biological process by which animals within the livestock species reproduce to produce offspring. It involves a series of physiological events and behaviors that lead to fertilization, gestation, and ultimately the birth of offspring.

Terms in Livestock Reproduction

The following are common terms associated with livestock production.

  1. Ovulation: Ovulation is the process in which a mature ovarian follicle ruptures and releases an egg (ovum) from the ovary into the reproductive tract of the female animal.
  2. Oestrus Cycle: The oestrus cycle, also known as the estrous cycle, is the recurring reproductive cycle in female mammals, including livestock species, characterized by hormonal fluctuations and changes in reproductive tract physiology.
  3. Heat Period: The heat period, also known as oestrus or estrus, refers to the phase of the oestrus cycle during which the female animal exhibits behavioral and physiological signs of sexual receptivity.
  4. Mating: Mating is the process of copulation or sexual intercourse between male and female animals, leading to the transfer of sperm from the male to the female reproductive tract.
  5. Gestation: Gestation is the period of pregnancy during which the developing offspring, or fetus, grows and develops within the female animal's uterus.
  6. Parturition: Parturition, commonly known as giving birth or labor, is the process by which the pregnant female animal expels the fully developed fetus(es) from the uterus, resulting in the birth of offspring.
  7. Lactation: Lactation is the production and secretion of milk by the mammary glands of the female animal, primarily to nourish and provide sustenance to the newborn offspring.
