LAND AND PEOPLE IF NIGERIA
History of Nigeria up to 1899
Nigeria's history up to 1899 is characterized by the emergence of various indigenous kingdoms and states, as well as increasing interactions with external powers. The region saw the rise and fall of powerful empires such as the Kingdom of Benin, the Hausa city-states, and the Oyo Empire. European exploration and trade began in the 15th century, with Portuguese, Dutch, and British traders establishing coastal settlements. The transatlantic slave trade also had a significant impact on the region. By the late 19th century, British colonial expansion intensified, leading to the eventual colonization of Nigeria.
Land and People of Nigeria
Nigeria is located in West Africa and is the most populous country on the continent. It is home to over 250 ethnic groups, with the three largest being the Hausa-Fulani, Yoruba, and Igbo. The country has diverse landscapes, including savannas, forests, and coastal areas, and is rich in natural resources such as oil, natural gas, and minerals.
Geographical Zones
Nigeria is typically divided into six geographical zones: North Central, North East, North West, South East, South South, and South West. Each zone has distinct characteristics in terms of climate, vegetation, and cultural practices.
Impact of Geography on People's Activities
Geography plays a significant role in shaping the livelihoods and activities of Nigeria's people. For example, the availability of natural resources influences economic activities such as agriculture, mining, and fishing. The varying climate and terrain affect transportation networks and settlement patterns. Additionally, Nigeria's coastal areas are vulnerable to environmental challenges such as erosion and flooding, impacting livelihoods and infrastructure development.
