SUBSISTENCE AND COMMERCIAL AGRICULTURE

Subsistence agriculture is the type of agriculture concerned with the cultivation of crops and raising of animals for the purpose of feeding one’s self and family. It is done on a small scale

Commercial agriculture is the type of agriculture concerned with the cultivation of crops and raising of animals for sales. It is done on a large scale 

 

CHARACTERISTICS OF SUBSISTENCE AGRICULTURE

  1. it is practiced on a small piece of land
  2. Traditional management is employed
  3. cost of production is low
  4. provides direct employment for many citizens
  5. it engages mixed-cropping system
  6. No specialization is required
  7. Family labour is used
  8. No access to credit facilities

 

CHARACTERISTICS OF COMMERCIAL AGRICULTURE

  1. It is practiced on a large piece of land
  2. Modern or scientific management is employed
  3. cost of production is high
  4. skilled people are employed for different tasks
  5. it engages mono-cropping system
  6. farmer specializes in the production of fewer crops and animals rearing
  7. skill and mechanized labour is employed
  8. access to credit facilities
