Merits of Tourism
- Tourism contributes significantly to the economy by generating revenue through accommodation, transportation, attractions, and other tourist services.
- Tourism promotes cultural exchange and understanding by bringing people from different backgrounds together.
- Tourism development often leads to the improvement of infrastructure such as roads, airports, hotels, restaurants, and public facilities.
- Tourism can incentivize the conservation and preservation of natural and cultural resources. Protected areas, wildlife reserves, and historical sites are often managed and maintained to attract tourists, helping to safeguard biodiversity and heritage.
- Tourism can empower local communities by providing opportunities for entrepreneurship, cultural preservation, and community development.
Demerits of Tourism
- Tourism can lead to environmental degradation through habitat destruction, pollution, waste generation, and resource depletion.
- Mass tourism can disrupt local cultures and traditions by commercializing cultural practices, displacing residents, and promoting cultural commodification.
- Tourism development can result in social displacement and inequities, particularly in communities with limited resources.
- Tourism-dependent economies are vulnerable to fluctuations in visitor numbers, currency exchange rates, and global economic conditions.
- Overtourism occurs when destinations become overcrowded with tourists, leading to environmental degradation, cultural strain, and negative impacts on residents' quality of life.
