SOURCES OF HISTORY AND DATING

Sources of history can be defined as the various means through which historical information are preserved and transmitted from one generation to another generation. Sources can also be called EVIDENCE.

Sources of history can be categorized into two main types: primary sources and secondary sources.

  1. Primary Sources: These are firsthand accounts or evidence created during the time period being studied. Examples include: Diaries, Letters, Official documents, Artifacts, Oral histories, Newspapers and other periodicals from the time, Photographs and videos etc.
  2. Secondary Sources: These are interpretations or analyses of primary sources. They are created after the time period being studied and often provide context or commentary. Examples include: History books, Scholarly articles, Biographies, Documentaries, Textbooks etc

Regarding dating, historians use various methods to determine the age of historical events, artifacts, and documents. Some common dating techniques include:

  1. Relative dating: This method involves determining the age of an artifact or event relative to other artifacts or events.
  2. Absolute dating: Also known as chronometric dating, this method provides an exact age or range of ages for an artifact or event.
  3. Historical records: Written documents, inscriptions, and other historical records often include dates or chronological markers that help historians establish timelines and dates for events.
  4. Carbon dating: This method is particularly useful for dating organic materials, such as bone, wood, and charcoal, up to around 50,000 years old.
