NOTE

WARM UP

Warm-up is the practice of engaging in light physical activity before starting a more intense exercise or sports session. The purpose of warm-up is to prepare the body and mind for the upcoming activity by increasing blood flow, raising body temperature, and enhancing mental focus.

Types of warm ups

There are three primary types of warm-up:

  1. General Warm-up: This type of warm-up involves low-intensity, full-body movements that increase overall body temperature and blood flow. Examples of general warm-up activities include light jogging, jumping jacks, and brisk walking. The general warm-up is usually the first step in preparing for more vigorous activity.
  2. Static Stretching: Static stretching involves holding a stretch in a fixed position for a short period, typically 20-30 seconds. This type of stretching focuses on increasing muscle elasticity and joint mobility. Examples of static stretching exercises include holding a hamstring stretch or a chest stretch.
  3. Dynamic Stretching: Dynamic stretching involves moving through a range of motion while stretching the muscles. This type of stretching focuses on improving functional mobility, balance, and coordination, making it more relevant to sports and physical activity. Examples of dynamic stretching exercises include leg swings, arm circles, and hip rotations.

Importance of warm up

Some importance of warm up includes

  1. Warm-up increases muscle elasticity, joint mobility, and blood flow, which helps reduce the risk of injuries such as muscle strains, joint sprains, and tears.
  2. Warm-up enhances physical performance by increasing body temperature, which optimizes muscle contraction and relaxation, as well as enzyme activity.
  3. Dynamic stretching and other movement-based warm-up exercises help improve coordination, balance, and proprioception (awareness of body position).
  4. Warm-up provides an opportunity to mentally prepare for the upcoming exercise or sports session.
  5. Stretching during warm-up can improve flexibility and range of motion, allowing for more efficient and effective movement patterns during exercise or sports.
  6. Warm-up can help reduce muscle soreness and stiffness following exercise, as increased blood flow and muscle elasticity can minimize muscle damage during physical activity.

EVALUATION: 1. What is warm up?

  1. Identify and discuss the types of warm up.
  2. Mention 4 importance of warm up.
