Mathematics - Primary 6 - Order of basic operations (BODMAS)

Order of basic operations (BODMAS)

Term: 1st Term

Week 7

Class: Primary 6
Age: 11 years
Duration: 40 minutes of 5 periods
Date:
Subject: Mathematics
Topic: Order of Basic Operations (BODMAS)

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES:

At the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to:

  1. Recall the meaning of BODMAS.
  2. Explain the steps involved in the order of operations.
  3. Use the correct order of operations to solve mathematical expressions.
  4. Apply BODMAS in solving real-life word problems.
  5. Solve quantitative reasoning problems involving BODMAS.

INSTRUCTIONAL TECHNIQUES:

  • Problem-solving approach
  • Demonstration
  • Group activities
  • Use of teaching aids
  • Guided practice and discussion

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS:

  • Chart showing the BODMAS acronym
  • Flashcards with mathematical expressions
  • Board and markers
  • Worksheets with real-life word problems
  • Quantitative reasoning textbook or handout

INSTRUCTIONAL PROCEDURES:

PERIOD 1 and 2:

PRESENTATION

Step

Teacher’s Activity

Pupil’s Activity

STEP 1 – INTRODUCTION

Introduces the topic by asking pupils how they solve expressions with multiple operations.

Pupils respond and share ideas.

STEP 2 – EXPLANATION

Explains the meaning of BODMAS (Brackets, Orders, Division, Multiplication, Addition, Subtraction).

Pupils listen, ask questions, and take notes.

STEP 3 - DEMONSTRATION

Demonstrates step-by-step how to solve problems using the correct order.

Pupils solve similar problems on the board.

STEP 4 - NOTE TAKING

Pupils take down rules and examples of using BODMAS.

Pupils take notes and participate.

NOTE (On the Board):
BODMAS Rule:

  • B = Brackets
  • O = Orders (powers, roots)
  • D = Division
  • M = Multiplication
  • A = Addition
  • S = Subtraction
    Examples:
  1. 8 + 2 × 3 = 8 + 6 = 14
  2. (6 + 4) × 2 = 10 × 2 = 20

Exercise:

  • Solve:
    a. 4 + 5 × 2
    b. (3 + 2)²
    c. 12 ÷ 3 + 5

EVALUATION:

  • Ask pupils to solve five expressions using BODMAS.

CLASSWORK:

  • Solve expressions with multiple operations.

ASSIGNMENT:

  • Write and solve 5 real-life problems using BODMAS.

PERIOD 3 and 4:

PRESENTATION

Step

Teacher’s Activity

Pupil’s Activity

STEP 1 – INTRODUCTION

Recap BODMAS rules.

Pupils recall and discuss rules.

STEP 2 - WORD PROBLEMS

Provides real-life word problems for pupils to interpret.

Pupils analyze and translate problems into expressions.

STEP 3 - GROUP WORK

Divides class into groups to solve different word problems using BODMAS.

Pupils work in groups and present answers.

STEP 4 - NOTE TAKING

Pupils note key steps in solving word problems.

Pupils write down tips and solved examples.

EVALUATION:

  • Pupils solve 3 word problems independently.

CLASSWORK:

  • Solve 3 real-life problems using BODMAS.

ASSIGNMENT:

  • Create 2 word problems and solve them using BODMAS.

PERIOD 5:

PRESENTATION

Step

Teacher’s Activity

Pupil’s Activity

STEP 1 - INTRODUCTION

Introduces BODMAS in Quantitative Reasoning.

Pupils listen and engage.

STEP 2 - PRACTICE

Guides pupils through questions from QR books.

Pupils solve questions using BODMAS.

STEP 3 - CLASS DISCUSSION

Reviews solutions and corrects mistakes.

Pupils discuss and learn from errors.

CLASSWORK:

  • Solve 5 QR questions using the order of operations.

ASSIGNMENT:

  • Complete a QR worksheet at home.

CONCLUSION:
Teacher praises pupils' effort and encourages continuous practice of BODMAS in everyday math problems.

SUMMARY OF LESSON:
This week, pupils learned how to use the BODMAS rule to solve mathematical expressions, interpret real-life problems, and apply these skills in quantitative reasoning questions.
