STEP 3 DEMONSTRATION | She describes the First Military Coup. Nigeria gained independence in 1960 and republic in1963. Civil rule only lasted from 1960 to 1966. The first military rule was recorded on 15 Jan 1966. The coup that toppled the government of Sir Alhaji Tafawa Balewa was organized by 5 majors led by Major Chukwuma Kaduna Nzeogwu. In that coup, The Prime minister was assassinated and other civilian leaders from the north. These young officers did not take over the government because they were over powered by the senior military officers led by major general J.T.U Aguiyi Ironsi. Ironsi, subsequently took over power in 1966. Following the installation of J.I Aguiyi Ironsi. The northern officers in the army were not happy. They felt that their leaders were targeted by Igbo military officers because the civilian leaders of Igbo origin were not killed in the coup. As a result of this grievance, the northern army officers organized a counter coup just six months after the January 15 coup. Thus in July 1966 Aguiyi Ironsi was killed and Yakubu Gowon took over government of the federal republic of Nigeria. | Pupils pay attention and participate |
