Project – Drawing the Map of Nigeria with Scale

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES

By the end of this week, pupils should be able to:

  1. Identify the map of Nigeria and its major states.
  2. Understand the concept of scale in maps.
  3. Draw a simplified map of Nigeria.
  4. Apply the correct scale to show the size of each state.
  5. Label important cities and states on the map.

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS

  • Printed maps of Nigeria
  • Drawing paper
  • Rulers, pencils, erasers
  • Colouring pencils or markers
  • Chart showing scales (e.g. 1cm = 50km)
  • Atlas or globe (if available)

INSTRUCTIONAL PROCEDURE

PERIOD 1: Introduction to the Map of Nigeria

Shows Nigeria’s map and discusses major features.

Pupils observe, ask questions.

Discussion

Discusses cardinal points (N, S, E, W), major cities, and states.

Pupils locate their state and neighbouring states.

Explanation

Introduces concept of scale in maps. Explains why scale is used.

Pupils listen and take notes.

Note on the Board:

Map Scale:

- Scale = Ratio of map distance to real distance.

- Example: 1cm = 100km means 1cm on the map represents 100km in real life.

 

PERIOD 2 & 3: Drawing the Map of Nigeria

Teacher guides pupils to draw the outline of Nigeria using grid method or trace method.

Pupils follow and draw map outlines.

Practice

Guide pupils in using ruler to apply a scale (e.g. 1cm = 100km).

Pupils scale their maps accordingly.

Labelling

Shows pupils how to label states, capital cities.

Pupils label key locations.

 

PERIOD 4 & 5: Group Project

Divide class into groups to create large map posters.

Pupils collaborate on drawing and labelling.

Presentation

Each group presents their map, scale, and highlights a few states.

Pupils present and explain their work.

Evaluation Criteria:

  • Accuracy of map outline
  • Correct use of scale
  • Proper labelling of at least 15 states
  • Creativity and neatness

Assignment:

  • Label your map at home and colour each region with a different colour.

 

Conclusion:

Teacher praises pupils for their effort and creativity. Displays best projects on the class wall.
