The teacher explains doubles are used in speech to give greater emphasis

1. by repetition of actual word e.g again and again, by and by, neck and neck etc

 

2. by repetition of meaning e.g beck and call, ways and means, far and away, puff and blow, etc

 

3. By alliteration(words beginning with the same letter) e.g kith and kin, might and main, part and parcel, safe and sound, hale and hearty etc

 

4. By opposites e.g this and that, thick and thin, on and off, great and small, in and out, high and low etc

 

5. by words of similar sound e.g high and dry, fair and square, out and about, wear and tear

 

6. by related words e.g heart and soul, hip and thigh,  tooth and nail, hard and fast, free and easy, root and branch, head and shoulders etc

 

7. other examples e.g all and sundry, fast and loose, over and above, touch and go, time and again etc
