EXPLANATION

She explains that after Independence, Nigeria was still operating under British constitution and political arrangement. Though election was held and won by various political parties, the political structure of Nigeria was still as the British arraigned it. In 1963, power of self- government or self- determination was handed over  to the elected civilian leaders of Nigerian origin. It was at this hand over that Nigeria was said to become a republic and that was in1963.

As at independence, Nigeria was divided into three regional arrangement, the North, west and eastern regions. In 1963, the fourth region was created from the western region called Mid- western region. The four regions were under elected premiers who were:

1. Northern Region: Sir Alhaji Ahmadu Bello

2. Western Region: Chief Obafemi Awolowo and later replaced by Chief S.L. Akintola.

3. Eastern Region: Dr. Michael Okpara

4. Mid-western Region: Chief Dennis Osadebey.
