British colonization lasted until 1960 when an independence movement succeeded in gaining independence for Nigeria. STEP 3 DEMONSTRATION | She describes the Key People that Participated in the Independence Day Celebration: 1. Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe as the Governor General of Nigeria 2. Tafawa Balewa as the prime minister of Nigeria 3. Representatives of the Queen of England. On that day in history, the British flag was lowered and the Nigerian National flag went up. The handover ceremony was held in Lagos.
