Term: 3rd Term
Week: 1
Class: Primary 5
Age: 10 years
Duration: 40 minutes of 3 periods
Date:
Subject: Basic Science and Technology
Topic:- Acids and Bases
- Food and nutrition
- Digital literacy
SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES: At the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to
INSTRUCTIONAL TECHNIQUES: Identification, explanation, playway method, questions and answers, demonstration, videos from source
INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS: computer system, projector, sound system, wood ash, water blue, red litmus paper, glass or plastic container, palm oil, stove, wooden spoon or spatula, dry handkerchief
INSTRUCTIONAL PROCEDURES
PERIOD 1: Acid and bases
PRESENTATION | TEACHER’S ACTIVITY | PUPIL’S ACTIVITY |
STEP 1 INTRODUCTION | The teacher revises the previous lesson on maintenance | Pupils pay attention |
STEP 2 EXPLANATION | She explains the meaning, types and examples of acids An acid is any substance that in water solution tastes sour, changes blue litmus paper to red, reacts with some metals to liberate hydrogen, reacts with bases to form salts, and promotes chemical reactions
Types of acid and their examples 1. Common strong acids include hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, phosphoric acid, and nitric acid. 2. Common weak acids include acetic acid, boric acid, hydrofluoric acid, oxalic acid, citric acid, and carbonic acid.
| Pupils pay attention and participates |
STEP 3 DEMONSTRATION | She explains the meaning, types and examples of bases Base is any substance that in water solution is slippery to the touch, tastes bitter, changes the colour of indicators (e.g., turns red litmus paper blue), reacts with acids to form salts, and promotes certain chemical reactions Bases can primarily be divided into two types: 1. Strong bases- Potassium hydroxide (KOH), Sodium hydroxide (NaOH), Caesium hydroxide (CsOH), Strontium hydroxide (Sr(OH)2), and Lithium hydroxide (LiOH) 2. Weak bases- Ammonia (NH3), Aluminium hydroxide( Al(OH)3), Lead hydroxide (Pb(OH)2), Ferric hydroxide (Fe(OH)3), Copper hydroxide (Cu(OH)2), Zinc hydroxide (Zn(OH)2), Trimethylamine (N(CH3)3), Methylamine (CH3NH2) etc
| Pupils pay attention and participate |
STEP 4 NOTE TAKING | The teacher writes a short note on the board | The pupils copy the note in their books |

PERIOD 2 and 3: Nutrition. Digital Literacy
PRESENTATION | TEACHEIR’S ACTIVITY | PUPIL’S ACTIVITY |
STEP 1 INTRODUCTION | The teacher revisits the previous lesson on recreation | Pupils pay attention |
STEP 2 EXPLANATION | She explains the meaning of nutrition Nutrition is the taking in and use of food and other nourishing material by the body.
She also discusses the importance of nutrition 1 Reduce the risk of some diseases, including heart disease, diabetes, stroke, some cancers, and osteoporosis. 2 Reduce high blood pressure. 3 Lower high cholesterol. 4 Improve your well-being. 5 Improve your ability to fight off illness. 6 Improve your ability to recover from illness or injury
She highlights some deficiency diseases 1. Scurvy: It is caused by a deficiency of vitamin C. 2. Rickets: It is caused by the deficiency of vitamin D. 3. Anaemia: It is caused by the deficiency of iron. 4. Goitre: It is caused by the deficiency of iodine 5. Marasmus: it is caused by the deficiency of carbohydrates 6. Kwashiorkor: It is caused by the deficiency of protein 7. Dehydration: It is caused by the deficiency of water | Pupils pay attention and participates |
STEP 3 DEMONSTRATION | She explains the meaning of digital literacy, copyright, plagiarism Digital literacy means having the skills you need to live, learn, and work in a society where communication and access to information is increasingly through digital technologies like internet platforms, social media, and mobile device Copyright is a legal term describing ownership of control of the rights to the use and distribution of certain works of creative expression, including books, video, motion pictures, musical compositions and computer programs.
Plagiarism is presenting someone else's work or ideas as your own, with or without their consent, by incorporating it into your work without full acknowledgement. All published and unpublished material, whether in manuscript, printed or electronic form, is covered under this definition.
She highlights the components of digital literacy The eight components include 1. creativity 2. critical thinking 3. evaluation 4. cultural and social understanding 5. collaboration 6. find and select information 6. effective communication 7. e-safety 8. functional skills She also discusses the importance of digital literacy 1. Digital literacy skills allow you to find, use & create info online in a productive & useful way. 2. Having an understanding about digital literacy means you're able to use technology safely and it helps you avoid its dangers. 3. Possessing digital literacy allows you to improve the efficiency, access to things, fulfillment, and happiness in your life 4. creates new ways to teach and learn within the classroom | Pupils pay attention and participate |
