Setting is a literary device that allows the writer of a narrative to establish the time, location, and environment in which it takes place.

 

Functions

1. Setting indicates to the reader when and where the action takes place

 

2. Setting can be specific or general in terms of geographical location and historical time period

 

3. Setting initiates the main backdrop and mood for a story

 

4. Elements of setting may include culture, historical period, geography, and hour.
