SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES: At the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to

  1. Describe steps in selecting marriage partners
  2. Outline values that are relevant to selection of marriage partners.
  3. Suggest Loyal service that can be rendered to the Family. School and Nation
  4. Identify part of the body not to be touched by strangers or people
  5. Develop some personal safety rules.

STEP 1

INTRODUCTION

The teacher revisits the previous lesson on changing culture.

She Introduces Marriage as the legal union of a man and a woman coming to live together as legally married couples.

She List and Explain the Types Of Marriage Practices and Customs In Nigeria.

1. Christian or Church Marriage-

- The Marriage rites are performed in accordance to the dictates of the word of God in the Bible

- The Couples are expected not to have carnal knowledge of each other before coming to the altar for blessings

- The Bride is expected to be in white bridal gown to express her cleanliness, purity and virginity.

- Rings are exchanged as a symbol of Love and commitment to each other.

- Couples are given gifts as they begin a new life after the wedding.

2. Moslem or Islam Marriage(Nikah)-

-This is marriage is always done in the present of Islamic clearic and teachers.

- The intending wife to be is expected to cover up her face with veil before the bridegroom unveils her after all necessary marriage rite has been done.

- The Bride does not have to be present as long as she sends two witnesses to the drawn-up agreement. The consent of the Parents must be sought and approval must be given before the marriage rites can be performed.

- Normally, the ceremony consists of reading from the Quran, and the exchange of vows in front of witnesses for both partners.

3. Traditional Marriage-

-This is done in accordance to native laws, customs and tradition of the land.

- The Bride may even be pregnant as at the time that the traditional wedding is being conducted.

4. Marriage By Ordinance-

- The Court is the place where this legal issue is dealt with.

- This type of Marriage is actually done in a marriage registry in any local government.

- A Certificate is issued to authenticate the union

- The Purpose of going to the registry to get the union register is to legally cement the marriage relationship.

- Hence, the Wife legally has right to some extent to the properties or belongings of the husband.

4. Do not drink alcohol or smoke cigarettes

7. Call for help if there is a fire.
