NOTE

Nigeria with over 150 million population and more than 370 ethnic groups has three major ethnic groups: Hausa, Yoruba and Igbo. There are several other ethnic groups numbering more than one million members which include

 

THE ITSHEKIRI PEOPLE

They are located in Delta state. They are said to have migrated from Egypt. In the late 15th century they adopted a Benin prince as their monarch. They are traditionally fishermen and skillful traders.

The men wear a long sleeved shirt called Kemeje, tie a George wrapper around their waist and wear a hat with a feather stuck in it. The women wear colourful head gears called Nes(scarf) or coral beads. They are famous for their fishing skills, melodious songs, graceful fluid traditional dances, boat regatta and colourful masquerades
