SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES: At the end of the lesson, the pupils should be able to

  1. Identify and describe the use of digging tools
  2. Explain deficiency and malnutrition
  3. Discuss the deficiency diseases of each nutrient

INSTRUCTIONAL TECHNIQUES: Identification, explanation, playway method, questions and answers, demonstration.

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS: Charts of a well nourished child and a mal-nourished child, hoe, shovel, spade, pick axe

INTRODUCTION

The teacher revises the previous lesson on agricultural tillage tools and deficiency and malnurition

She explains the digging tools

1. Hoe is used for clearing the weeds.

 

2. Spade is used for digging the ground and  loosening the ground

 

3. Pick axe is used for breaking hard surfaces.  

 

4. Shovel is used for digging.

She explains the meaning of deficiency and malnutrition

Deficiency the quality or state of being defective or of lacking some necessary nutrients

 

Malnutrition is the condition that develops when the body is deprived of vitamins, minerals and other nutrients it needs to maintain healthy tissues and organ function. Malnutrition occurs in people who are either undernourished or overnourished.

 

She further outlines the deficiency disease of each nutrient

1. Protein- kwashiorkor

2. carbohydrates- marasmus

3. Vitamin- rickets, scurvy, anaemia

4. Fats and Oils- dermatitis, alopecia, Heart diseases, Colon cancer.

5. Minerals- goiter, excessive bleeding, anaemia

6. Water- Dehydration
