NOTE

Nigeria with over 150 million population and more than 370 ethnic groups has three major ethnic groups: Hausa, Yoruba and Igbo. There are several other ethnic groups numbering more than one million members which include

 

THE YALA PEOPLE

They are located in Benue, Nassarawa, Enugu and Cross river states. Their spread to the four states was due to migrations between 1700 and1800.

The most relevant part of their social-cultural activity is their New Yam festival celebrated every 30th of August.

Yala people believe in the worship of gods. They make their sacrifices and divinations at the shrine and worship the river god and fertility god. They’re gradually embracing Christianity. Some of their other socio-cultural activity includes, child naming ceremonies, circumcision rites, dances like the Ijor dance etc

They are rich in primary production activities such as weaving, earth work, blacksmithing, oil palm production etc.
