NOTE

Nigeria with over 150 million population and more than 370 ethnic groups has three major ethnic groups: Hausa, Yoruba and Igbo. There are several other ethnic groups numbering more than one million members which include

 

THE YAKURR PEOPLE

They are located in Cross River state. They are said to have come from Akp(a shortened form of lekanapkakpa). They migrated from Akpa to Yakurr in 1617 AD due to a misunderstanding between them and their neighbours due to the violation of a burial custom forced on them.

They are mainly farmers of yam, cocoyam, cassava, plantain, okro etc. many natural resources abound in Yakurr namely kaolin, sand glass and quartzite.

They have the same traditional attire as the Igbos. Leboku is their annual Yam Festival and it is celebrated to honour the earth goddess and the ancestral spirits of the land in Ugep.
