NOTE

Nigeria with over 150 million population and more than 370 ethnic groups has three major ethnic groups: Hausa, Yoruba and Igbo. There are several other ethnic groups numbering more than one million members which include

 

THE JUKUN PEOPLE

They are located in Taraba, Benue, Nassarawa, Plateau, Adamawa and Gombe states. They are descendants of the Kwararafa Kingdom. They became divided politically as a result of the Fulani coquest at the beginning of the 19th century. They ar divided into two main groups: The Jukun-wanu who are fishermen residing on the banks of the Benue and Niger rivers and the Jukun-Wada.

Their beliefs over the years haven’t changed as they believe that a man’s spirit lives on after his death. They believe in social justice, equity and freedom to all irrespective of gender, age or religion.

They wre mainly traditional pagans till the coming of Christianity and Islam.
