Meaning of heroes and heroines

A hero is a man who we admire for doing a brave and great thing

A heroine is a woman who we admire for doing a brave and great thing

OBA OVONRAMWEN OF BENIN

He was born in 1857 and was the Oba of Benin till 1897. Benin retained its independence till the end of the 19^th century and he exercised a monopoly over trade with the British.

A British invasion force headed by Phillip were set out to overthrow the Oba in 1896. Phillip’s weapons were hidden in baggage with troops disguised as bearers. His plan was to gain access to Oba’s palace by announcing that he intended to negotiate. The Oba issued several warnings not to violate Benin’s territorial integrity claiming he was unable to see him due to ceremonial duties. In response, Phillip sent his stick to the Oba which was a deliberate insult to provoke conflict. Phillip’s troop was ambushed and all but two were killed

This led to a military operation against Benin in 1897 led by Harry Rawson which led to the destruction and looting of the Oba’s palace, deaths of untold number of the people of Benin. Although they had the order to hand the Oba, he however escaped.

He returned to surrender himself in 1897 after six months of evading capture in the forest. He was richly dressed and adorned with beads, accompanied by 700 people. He died in January 1914 in Calabar
