NOTE

Nigeria with over 150 million population and more than 370 ethnic groups has three major ethnic groups: Hausa, Yoruba and Igbo. There are several other ethnic groups numbering more than one million members which include

 

THE NUPE PEOPLE

They are located in the Middle belt and Northern Nigeria. They have various traditions. Many of them have tribal marks on their faces to identify their prestige, family identity, protection and as jewellery adornment. Nupe art is very abstract. They are well known for wooden stools with patterns carved unto the surface

They live in large towns called “Ezi” and small towns called “Tunga” or “Kangi”. Village chief assisted by elders are the main authority. They are mainly farmers of millet, yams, rice, guinea corn etc. They are mainly muslims but some still worship spirits associated with natural objects.
