  2. List the sets of states created, their year of creation and who created them
  3. Discuss the reasons why these states were created
  4. List the governors of these states

The teacher revises the previous lesson on the states creation by Gen Yakubu Gowon

She then explains the meaning of state:

State is defined as a territory with its own government and borders within a larger country.

She further narrates how Gen Murtala Mohammed created seven new states on February 1976

STATES CREATION UNDER GEN MURTALA MOHAMMED-1976

In 1976, when Gen Murtala Mohammed came to power via coup d’etat, he created 7 new states. This led to the birth of Federal Capital Territory Abuja from Niger state, Niger and Sokoto states from North West state, Bauchi, Gongola and Borno from North Eastern state, Benue-Plateau was divided into Benue and Plateau, Ondo, Ogun and Oyo from Western states, Imo and Anambra from East central states. Here is the list of the 19 states:

  5. Niger
  6. Borno
  7. Kano
  8. Sokoto
  9. Kaduna
  10. Ogun
  11. Lagos
  12. Kwara
  13. Bendel
  14. Gongola

  17. Imo
  18. Plateau

  1. Write short notes on the creation of 7 new states by Murtala Mohammed
  2. Write the 19 states that were in existence during Murtala Mohammed’s rule
