SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES: At the end of the lesson, the pupils should be able to

  1. Explain the meaning of state
  2. List the sets of states created , their year of creation and who created them
  3. Discuss the reasons why these states were created
  4. List the governors of these states

INTRODUCTION OF TOPIC

The teacher revises the previous lesson on the four early regions

Pupils  pay attention

EXPLANATION

She then explains the meaning of state:

State is defined as a territory with its own government and borders within a larger country.

She further narrates how Gen Yakubu Gowon created the 12 states from the earlier 4 regions structure

STATES CREATION UNDER GEN YAKUBU GOWON-1967

In 1967, when Gen Yakubu Gowon came to power via coup d’etat, he dissolved regional government and created twelve states as follows

  1. Northwestern state
  2. kaduna
  3. kano
  4. Northeastern state
  5. Kwara
  6. Benue-Plateau state
  7. Western state
  8. Bendel
  9. East Central state
  10. Cross Rivers
  11. Lagos
  12. Rivers
