THE FOUR EARLY REGIONS

Region means a particular area or part of a state, country, or the earth's surface

At independence in 1960, Nigeria was divided into three regions; Western, eastern and northern regions and the federal district Lagos.

In 1963 however, two provinces, Benin and Delta were split from the Western region to form the new Mid-western region

The four early regions are as follows

  1. THE EASTERN REGION

It was one of the four regions developed during the British Colonial rule in Nigeria. Its population is largely Igbo; other ethnic groups include Tiv, Ibibio and Calabar. Its first capital was Calabar but was later moved to Enugu. And the second capital was Umuahia.

  1. MID-WESTERN REGION

It was created on June 1963 from the Benin and Delta provinces of the Western region. Its capital is Benin-city. In 1967, General Yakubu Gowon changed Nigeria’s four regions into twelve states. The Mid-Western region only changed its name to Bendel state.
