NOTE

A town is a place with many streets and buildings, where people live and work. Towns are larger than villages and smaller than cities.

 

SOKOTO

It is the capital of Sokoto state. It is historically remembered at the seat of the great Sokoto Caliphate between 1804 and 1903. The name is of Arabic origin representing ‘suk’(market). It is also known as Sakkwato or Birnin Shaiu da Bello (capital of shaihu and Bello). The sultan who heads the Caliphate is the spiritual leader of the Nigerian Muslims. It is the home of the University of Sokoto, the Sultan’s palace and the Shehu Mosque. Its population is estimated at 4,200,000.
