SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES: By the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to;

  1. Recognize, read and spell the ‘ai’ and ‘ie’ graphemes

TRY BEHAVIOR : Pupils can identify and recite all the letters of the alphabets and the vowels

SET INDUCTION : The teachers uses the ‘My ear hurts I was in pain’ song to arouse the pupils

INSTRUCTIONAL TECHNIQUES : Discussion, group activities,

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS : Objects with the ‘ai’ and ‘ie’ grapheme, chart showing objects with the ‘ai’ and ‘ie’ grapheme sound, white board, dry erase marker, clue cards

-Revises the Long and short vowel sounds we’ve treated before

- Introduces the grapheme ‘ai’ as one of the variations of the Long ‘a’ sound

- Explains that the sound ‘ai’ takes the sound of the ‘a’ letter name

- Gives a list of word with the ‘ai’ sound

GUIDED PRACTICE

- Shows the pupils clue cards with the grapheme in front and a clue word at the back. Have them say the clue word then sound the grapheme it represents e.g snail(ai)

- Shows the children several images of words containing the grapheme ‘ai’ and asks them to pronounce it aloud

INDEPENDENT WORKING TIME

- Gives the pupils exercises on the ‘ai’ sound

After each sentence write Yes or No

- Explains that there are two forms of the ‘ie’ sound

a. Long ‘e’ sound e.g piece, thief

-Then the teacher comes up with a T-chart of both ‘ie’ sounds

- Explains that the Long ‘e’ sound(ie), could be found in the middle of the word while the Long ‘I’ sound(ie) can mostly be found at the end of the word and occasionally at the middle
