SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES: At the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to

  1. Identify the components of soil
  2. Discuss the uses of soil to plants
  3. Mention and demonstrate the safety rules in basketball

INSTRUCTIONAL TECHNIQUES: Identification, explanation, playway method, questions and answers, demonstration, videos from source, experimentation

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS: school garden soil, water, cans, grains e.g. maize, beans etc., charts showing the uses of soil to plants, basketball court, balls, canvas, kneel cap, back board, sock/hose, basket net

PERIOD 1 and 2: Importance of soil to plants

STEP 1

INTRODUCTION

The teacher revisits the previous lesson on packaged water and introduces the new topic by explaining the meaning of soil- Soil is the uppermost layer of the earth crust where plants can grow

 

She then makes the whole class to observe a sample of soil and state the components they can see. Component which include;

1. water

2. microorganisms

3. minerals

4. gas

Pupils pay attention

STEP 2

EXPLANATION

The teacher then explains that there are three types of soil namely;

1. sandy soil

2, clay soil

3. loamy soil

STEP 3

DEMONSTRATION

The teacher further explains and demonstrates the uses of soil to plants

1. as a medium for plants to grow

2. as a source of nutrient and air

3. it protects the plant from erosion

4. it stores water for plant use

5. it houses microorganisms necessary for the growth of plants

 

Pupils pay attention and participate

NOTE TAKING

The teacher writes a short note on the board

The pupils copy the note in their books

CLASS ACTIVITY: Each pupil demonstrates planting seeds in the soil

CLASSWORK: As in evaluation

CONCLUSION: The teacher commends the pupils positively

 

PERIOD 3: Safety rules in basketball

STEP 1

INTRODUCTION

The teacher revisits the previous lesson and introduces the new topic and making the pupils to formulate the meaning of basketball by watching video clips on basketball

STEP 2

EXPLANATION

The teacher then explains that Basketball is a game played by two teams of five players each shooting a ball through a raised goal in order to score

STEP 3

DEMONSTRATION

She explains and demonstrates the safety rules in basketball

1. know the rules of the game and observe them

2. ensure that the basketball court isn’t wet or slippery

3. Wear the appropriate attire i.e jersey, kneel cap,  stockings/hose/socks, canvas, etc

4. Inform someone if you feel sick or are wounded

5. have a little warm up exercise before commencing any basketball game

6. obey the officials of the game
