Meaning of heroes and heroines
A hero is a man who we admire for doing a brave and great thing
A heroine is a woman who we admire for doing a brave and great thing
QUEEN AMINA OF ZARIA
She was the daughter of Bakwa of Turunku. She was born in 1533. her family was wealthy as they sold leather goods, cloth, kola, salt, horses and imported metals. When Bakwa died in 1566 the crown passed to Amina’s younger brother Karama. Although his reign was peaceful and prosperous, he died after ruling for 10 years. While he was on the throne, Amina was honing her military skills and had earned the respect of the Zazzau military leading to her ascending the throne
She led her first military charge a few months after assuming power and for the rest of her thirty-four years reign she continued to fight and expand her kingdom.
She initiates wars to make neighbouring rulers her vassal and permit her traders safe passage thereby boosting her wealth. Amongst other thigs, she introduced metal armor, including iron helmets and chain mail, to her army.
She fortified her all her military camps with an earthen wall and the walls are called Amina’s walls and may are still in existence till date. She died in 1610.
