SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES: At the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to

  1. Describe what clay is
  2. Mention the methods of modeling with clay
  3. Demonstrate the different methods of modeling using clay
  4. Model objects like animals, cups etc using clay

INSTRUCTIONAL TECHNIQUES: Identification, explanation, playway method, questions and answers, demonstration, videos from source, experimentation

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS: pencils, drawing books, colours, clay, water, video clip on modeling

STEP 1

INTRODUCTION

The teacher revisits the previous lesson about modeling with papier mache and introduces the new topic by explaining what modeling is-

Modeling is the method of creating objects using clay or papier mache

EXPLANATION

The teacher then further list the items used in modeling with clay

1. clay

2. water

3. flat surface

4. Mortar and pestle

5. screen/sieve

DEMONSTRATION

She further explains and demonstrates the steps in clay preparation

Wet Clay

1. Pour water into the clay and melt it

2. Let it stand for several hours.

3. Pour water off the top.

 

`Dry clay

1. pound the clay until it is in     powder form

2. Soak the clay.

3. Mix it up into a slurry.

4. Pour through a screen.

5. Let stand for several hours.

6. Pour water off the top.

 

She also explains the various methods of modeling objects using clay

1. Pinching method- It is using the thumb to make and shape the objects

2. Coiling method- it is using containers to make and shape the objects

3. Slab method-it is making ceramic structures from clay
