LESSON PLAN FOR 9th WEEK

CLASS : PRIMARY 3

TOPIC : Prefixes

CONTENT : Prefixes

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES: By the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to;

  1. define Prefix
  2. Add prefixes to words accurately
  3. Define words with prefixes based on their root words

ENTRY BEHAVIOR : Pupils can identify and recite all the letters of the alphabets and the vowels

SET INDUCTION : The teachers uses the ‘I know my vowels’ song to arouse the pupils

INSTRUCTIONAL TECHNIQUES : Discussion, group activities,

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS : Index cards with root words and prefixes listed in the lesson, Large cardboard paper cut into circles with prefixes written on them; one set for each group

INTRODUCTION

- Writes the word ‘invisible’ on the board and ask pupils to try to find a smaller word within the whole

- Tells the pupils that many words are made up of two parts- the root word and an added beginning, the prefix

-Introduces the topic on the board as Sounding, identification and writing of Prefixes

EXPLICIT INSTRUCTION/TEACHER MODELLING

- Explains that Prefixes are words made of two parts; root word and add-on  e.g

Dis(prefix)-obey(root word)

Ex(prefix)-plode (root word)

Il(prefix)-legal(root word)

Dis(prefix)-agree(root word)

Ir(prefix)-regular(root word)

- Explains that Prefixes changes the form of a word to its opposite

e.g

when a prefix(mis) is added to a root word(lead)

lead  becomes mislead

(opposites)

 

Regular becomes irregular(opposites)

GUIDED PRACTICE

- Distributes Prefix and root words index cards to pupils, Then reads out words with Prefixes allowing the pupils with the corresponding root word and prefix to come to the front of the group to assemble the word

As many prefixes and root word will be the same, have pupils take turns
