THE KALABARI PEOPLE
They are located in Rivers state. They migrated from the Benin fringes of the Ijaw land and became a large kingdom. Their traditional economy is based on fishing and trade. They were among the first tribes to be exposed to the Europeans. They were middlemen between Africa and the west, exchanging slaves, ivory, spices and palm oil for guns, gunpowder and Western luxury goods
Wealth is measured by how many people are in a man’s house both relatives, adopted relatives and slaves. Every powerful family has a canoe,
Paddler and pilots to navigate the Niger Delta rives and coast.
