NOTE

Nigeria with over 150 million population and more than 370 ethnic groups has three major ethnic groups: Hausa, Yoruba and Igbo. There are several other ethnic groups numbering more than one million members which include

 

THE IGALA PEOPLE

They are located in Kogi state. The ruling figure is known as the “Attah” which means “Father”. The people believe in the supremacy of Ojo Ogbekwugbekwu(God Almighty). They worship their ancestors, river gods and goddesses with diligence.

They also believe in Ilei(this world) and Oj’ona(The afterworld). Some Igalas are fishermen especially those in the riverine areas but majority are farmers of yam, maize, cassava, melon, groundnuts, beans etc.

The black (richness of Igalaland and prosperity and wealth of the people) and yellow colour(hospitality of the tribe) is of great significance to the Igalas.
