THE IBIBIO PEOPLE

They are located in Akwa Ibom state. About 5 million people in Nigeria spak the Ibiob language. They are the fourth most largest ethnic group in Nigeria. Their political system involves large families with blood ties ruled by heads called Ikpaisong who also rules with the Mbong Ekpuk and together with other heads of societies and cults made up the Asan, Afe or Esop Ikpaisong. The Ekpo or Obon acts as messengers of the spirits, military and police of the communities enforcing the decisions and orders of the traditional council. They were masked most of the time to hide their identities and made it easier for them to brutalize people who disobeyed the orders of the traditional council.
