PRESENTATION

TEACHER’S ACTIVITY

PUPIL’S ACTIVITY

STEP 1

MENTAL MATHS

The teacher begins the lesson with some mental calculations

Calculate

1. 30 – 3 =

2. 30 – 5 =

3. 40 – 2 =

4. 40 – 1 =

5. 50 – 6 =

6. 50 – 9 =

7. 60 – 8 =

8. 70 – 5 =

9. 80 – 4 =

10. 90 – 7 =

Pupils respond and participate

STEP 2

CONCEPT

DEVELOPMENT

The teacher writes 17- 9 = ___ on the board and asks the pupils how the problem can be solved. Learners should be encouraged not to use the counting method

Using the blocks and bonds strategy, the teacher explains how to solve the problem easily

17- 10,7

10 – 9 = 1

1+7 = 8

So 17 – 9 = 8

The same process is repeated with

23 – 6 =

32 – 5 =

56 – 9 =

CLASS ACTIVITY

The teacher writes 43-20 = _____ on the board and asks the learners how they think the problem could be solved

The teacher then emphasizes that there are no changes in the ones(3) is it is a multiple of 10(20) that is being subtracted i.e.

43 – 20 = 23

The same method is repeated with

58 – 30 =

72 – 50 =

Pupils pay attention and participate

STEP 3

CLASS-WORK

1. Break the numbers into blocks and bonds to find the solution

a. 24 – 9 =

b. 57 – 8 =

c. 26 – 8 =

d. 85 – 8 =

e. 92 – 7 =

2 Solve the problems:

a 22 – 8 =

b 52 – 9 =

c 77 – 9 =

d 26 – 7 =

e 81 – 4 =

3 What do we get if we subtract:

a 63 – 10 =

b 93 – 50 =

Pupils attempt their class work

STEP 4

HOME-WORK

1. Break the numbers into blocks and bonds to find the solution

a. 63 – 9 =

b. 57 – 8 =

c. 45 – 7 =

d. 32 – 6 =

Pupils attempt their class work

STEP 5

SUMMARY

The teacher summarizes by ensuring the pupils solve the problems mentally and give assistance where necessary. The teacher also ensures their solid understanding of place value

She marks their class works, makes corrections where necessary and commends them positively

PERIOD 2: mental maths with 2-digit numbers

PRESENTATION

TEACHER’S ACTIVITY

PUPIL’S ACTIVITY

STEP 1

ORAL

ASSESSMENTS

The teacher asks questions on mental maths with 2-digit numbers treated so far

Pupils respond and participate

STEP 2

DISCUSSION

The teacher discusses all the methods used by some learners in the oral assessments(some of the questions are solved on the board by the learners) and addresses any misconceptions that may have risen

Pupils pay attention and participate

STEP 3

WRITTEN ASSESSMENTS

1 Solve the following:

a 65 + ____ = 70

b 34 + 6 = _____

c 71 + ____ = 80

d 46 + 4 = _____

2. Break up the number to find the solution:

a. 43 + 9 =

b. 29 + 5 =

3. Break up the number into tens and ones to find the solution:

a. 82 – 6 =

b. 66 – 9 =

4 Solve the problems:

a 41 – 7 =

b 53 + 9 =

c 63 – 9 =

d 27 + 6 =

e 84 – 5 =

f 37 + 5 =

5 What do we get if we add:

a 13 + 80 =

b 51 + 40 =

6 What do we get if we subtract

a 84 – 20 =

b 39 – 10 =

Pupils attempt their class work

STEP 4

SUMMARY

The teacher marks the written assessments, corrects were necessary and commends the pupils

PERIOD 3: Addition using column method

PRESENTATION

9. 2 + 9 =

10. 3 + 9 =

Pupils respond and participate

STEP 2

CONCEPT

DEVELOPMENT

The teacher writes 86 + 43 = ____ on the board. Pupils are asked to solve the above question using simplified pictorial on a place value table(they are expected to cross out hundreds, tens and ones using double lines and write arrows to show carrying movement)

Pupils pay attention and participate
