THE ANANG PEOPLE

They are located and seen in Akwa Ibom and Cross River states. Their main resource is maize and yam farming. They live in villages led by a chief elected from the most honourable heads of the important families. They have  three secret societies and the most important of them is “EKPO” which is responsible for the cult of the ancestors, who are in turn responsible for the welfare of the people.

They are mostly subsistence farmers, traders, craftsmen or civil servants. Their economy is not strong enough so sometimes their young people are given out to comfortable people for menial works in the cities
