SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES: At the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to

  1. Identify the traditional fabrics of the major cultures of Nigeria
  2. Appreciate their cultural heritage in terms of their traditional dresses
  3. State the occasion each attire is used and their importance

INSTRUCTIONAL TECHNIQUES: Identification, explanation, playway method, questions and answers, demonstration, videos from source, experimentation

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS: Charts and pictures of Nigerian traditional wears, samples of traditional fabrics and dresses

STEP 1

INTRODUCTION

The teacher revisits the previous lesson about clothes for different occasions

 

Traditional clothes are forms of clothing that represents a long-established people's way of dressing within a specific location or tribe.

EXPLANATION

Using charts and posters, the teacher further explains the different traditional dresses and fabrics for various cultures in Nigeria

Yoruba

Females- Iro, Buba and gele

Males- shokoto and agbada

 

Igbos

Females- blouse with puffed sleeves, wrapper, scarf

Males- Isi agu top, black trouser, walking stick, red cap

 

Hausas

Females- Riga and zanne wrappers, with gyale and dan kwali

Males- Danshiki and round fula cap

Pupils pay attention and participates

DEMONSTRATION

She then explains that the attires are used for all kinds of occasions; weddings, burials, naming ceremonies etc

 

She also explains the importance of traditional dresses and fabrics

1. It helps us to conserve and learn the customs of the past

2. It gives us a unique identity and reveals where we are from

3. it brings about respect as decency is the core of traditional dresses and fabrics
