SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES: By the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to;

  1. define Syllable
  2. identify syllables in words

ENTRY BEHAVIOR : Pupils can identify and recite all the letters of the alphabets and the vowels

SET INDUCTION : The teachers uses the ‘Alphabet’ song to arouse the pupils

INTRODUCTION

- Begin by asking the pupils to read the introduction and ‘Identifying Syllables’ section of the text lesson aloud as a group, tapping along with the lesson when instructed to

 

- As they read, write the words ‘fox’ and ‘window’ on the board

 

- Now have the pupils say their names aloud, tapping their desks to mark each syllable

EXPLICIT INSTRUCTION/TEACHER MODELLING

- Explains that ‘A Syllable is a group of letters that has at least one vowel sound’. Sometimes, the first syllable is stressed so you say it a little louder. Sometimes too the last syllable is stressed.

GUIDED PRACTICE

- Writes the following words on the board

Mammal

 

- Ask the pupils to stand up. Going word by word, have the students stomp their feet to represent the number of syllables in each word. For example, students should stomp twice for ‘butter’ and so on

 Each of the words below has two syllables. Draw a line to divide the two syllables and underline the stressed syllable
