CONTENT: Suffixes

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES: By the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to;

  1. define Suffix
  2. Add suffixes to words accurately
  3. Define words with suffixes based on their root words

ENTRY BEHAVIOR: Pupils can identify and recite all the letters of the alphabets and the vowels

SET INDUCTION: The teachers uses the ‘I know my vowels’ song to arouse the pupils

INSTRUCTIONAL TECHNIQUES: Discussion, group activities,

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS: Index cards with root words and suffixes listed in the lesson, Large cardboard paper cut into circles with suffixes written on them; one set for each group

INTRODUCTION

- Writes the word ‘teacher’ on the board and ask pupils to ENTRY to find a smaller word within the whole

- Tells the pupils that many words are made up of two parts- the root word and an added ending, the suffix

-Introduces the topic on the board as Sounding, identification and writing of suffixes

- Explains that Suffixes are words made of two parts; root word and add-end  e.g

Nation(root)- al(suffix)

- Explains that Suffixes changes the parts of speech of the words

e.g

Proverb is a noun

But when a suffix is added Proverb-ial, it becomes an adjective

Expense- Verb

Expensive- adjective

Expensively- Adverb

GUIDED PRACTICE

- Distributes Suffix and root words index cards to pupils, Then reads out words with suffixes allowing the pupils with the corresponding root word and suffix to come to the front of the group to assemble the word

As many suffixes and root word will be the same, have pupils take turns
