States in Nigeria
There are 36states in Nigeria plus the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) under the control of the Federal government. In Nigeria, there are 774 local government areas.
BAUCHI (Pearl of Tourism)
It is located in the North eastern part of Nigeria. Its capital is Bauchi state. It was created out of the North-Eastern state in 1976. Its population is mostly Muslims. It reduced in size by the creation of Gombe state in 1996. It is one of the 12 states that has incorporated sharia into their criminal codes. Economic activities include maize, rice and groundnut productions. It consists of 20 local government areas
BAYELSA (Glory of all lands)
It is located in the South-South. Its capital is Yenagoa. It was created out of Rivers state in 1996. Christianity and Indigenous religions are the main forms of religion. Economic activities are fishing and oil palm cultivation. It consists of 8 local governments.
BENUE (Food basket of the nation)
It is located in North central Nigeria. Its capital is Makurdi. It is named after the famous river Benue. It was created from Benue-Plateau state in 1976. Economic activities include cultivation of yam, cassava, sweet potatoes, soya beans, guinea corn, groundnut and mining of natural gas and coal. It consists of 23 local government areas.
BORNO STATE (Home of Peace)
It is located in North eastern Nigeria. It was created out of North-eastern state in 1976. It is one of the 12 states to incorporate sharia law into their criminal code. It was the location of the great Kanem-Bornu empire. Economic activities include farming, herding livestock (such as cattle, goats) and mining (such as limestone and iron ore). It consists of 27 local government areas. It is mainly an Islamic region.
