Meaning of heroes and heroines
A hero is a man who we admire for doing a brave and great thing
A heroine is a woman who we admire for doing a brave and great thing
OLUFUNMILAYO RANSOME-KUTI
She was born on 25th October 1900 in Abeokuta. She was a prominent women leader renowned for fighting for women’s right against the military government over unjust practices and abuse of human rights. She was also the mother of Fela Anikulapo Kuti, a prominent musician in Nigeria. She is fondly called the “Mother of Africa”
She was elected to the native house of chiefs and a ranking member of the National Council of Nigeria and the Cameroon. She was also the first Nigerian woman to drive a car in Nigeria.
She died from injuries she sustained when she was thrown from the third-floor window of her son’s house when the military invaded his house.
MARGARET EKPO
She was born on 27th June 1914 in Creek town, Calabar. She was a Nigerian women’s rights activist and a first republic politician. She was a member of the National Council of Nigeria and the Cameroons(NCNC) and was nominated to the regional house of chiefs in 1954. She established the Aba Township Women’s Association and by 1955, women in Aba outnumbered men voters in a city wide election
She died on 21st September 2006 and Calabar Airport was named after her.
