INTRODUCTION

The teacher revises the previous lesson and introduces the new topic by Explaining what an adverb is

 

Adverbs are words used to talk more about the verb. Examples include quickly, sadly, happily, easily etc

EXPLICIT INSTRUCTION/TEACHER MODELLING

The teacher further explains the types of adverbs giving examples of each

1. Manner(how)- it tells us how and action occurs e.g loudly, quickly, slowly etc

We walked slowly

 

2. Time(when)- it tells us when a particular action takes place e.g today, tomorrow, yesterday etc

He came yesterday

 

3. Place(where)- it tells us where an action takes place e.g here, there, nowhere etc

I saw him there

 

4. Number(how many)- it tells us how many times an action occurs e.g once, twice, thrice etc

I saw him thrice

 

5. Degree(how much)- it refers to the rate at which an action occurs e.g very, rather, quite, mostly etc

She is very good

 

6. Frequency- it tells us how frequent the action occurs e.g often, seldom, always, never etc

I always see him

 

She further explains the position of adverbs in the sentence

POSITION OF ADVERBS

It is usually placed as close as possible to the verb it is describing e.g

I often go there

She seldom visits us

However for the adverbs of manner and number, its usual position is at the end e.g

He sang loudly

We slept quietly

I met him only once

The pupils are asked to

1. Explain the meaning of adverbs

2. Explain the following types of adverbs, giving examples of each

a. manner

b. time

c. place

d. number

e. degree

f. frequency

 

3. Describe the positions where the adverb is placed in a sentence and the exceptions

Pupils are asked to answer question  A-B on page 61-62 of the text-book
