INTRODUCTION

The teacher revises the previous lesson and introduces the new topic by Explaining what Verbs are

Verbs are doing words. A verb tells us what to do. 

Examples of verbs are Eat, look, play, sing, dance, cook, write etc

EXPLICIT INSTRUCTION/TEACHER MODELLING

The teacher further explains the following

1. In the simple present tense, the 3rd person singular usually end in ‘s’ e.g

1st person singular  3rd person singular

I see                        He sees

I point                      He points

I eat                         He eats

 

In some cases, the 3rd person singular ends in –es e.g

I touch                     he touches

I catch                     he catches

I go                          he goes

 

2. For verbs ending in ‘e’, drop the ‘e’ for ‘ing’ to make their present and past continuous tenses e.g

Drive          driving

Hide           hiding

Take           taking

Give            giving

Make           making

Bake            baking

 

3. For one syllable verbs that ends with a consonant, double the consonant and add ‘ing’ for their continuous tenses e.g

Stop            stopping

Cut              cutting

Run             running

Dig              digging

Wet             wetting

Put              putting

1. Explain the meaning of verbs

2. Explain the following

a. how the 3rd person singular in simple present tense ends

b. using examples, how does the verbs ending in ‘e’ become present or past continuous tense

c. how one syllable verbs ending in consonant change into their present and past continuous tense
