NOTE

A town is a place with many streets and buildings, where people live and work. Towns are larger than villages and smaller than cities.

ABEOKUTA

It is located in Ogun state. It is also the capital of Ogun state and the home to the Chief (Alake) of Egba land. Abeokuta means “Under the rock”. The ton was one of the first locations of the European Christian Missions e.g The Anglican Church Missionary Society. Notable Nigerians like Bishop Samuel Ajayi Crowther was sent to Abeokuta to do missionary work Abeokuta produced many western-educated people including Olufunmilayo Ransome Kuti who led a protest against a corrupt Alake and the taxation of the Abeokuta women

Abeokuta people are known for the Adire cloth which is made by resist-dyeing using wax and indigo. Its population is estimated at 700,000.

 

ILE-IFE

It is located in Osun state. Oduduwa’s the ancestor of the Yoruba kings final home was Ile-Ife. Ile-Ife losts its status as the centre of Yoruba politics to the Oyo empire by the 14th century. It is home to the popular Obafemi Awolowo University. Its population is estimated at 300,000.

 

ZARIA

It is located in Kaduna state. It was founded in the 11th century by Queen Bakwa Turunku, th 22nd ruler. She built strong walls around the city. It was earlier called Zazzau and was later changed to Zaria in 1536 in honour of Turunku’s grand daughters. Zaria chronicled 60 rulers before the Fulani Jihad led by Usman Dan Fodio.

During the British era, military post was in Zaria. Zaria is the home to the famous Ahmadu Bello University. Its population is 400,000

 

ILORIN

It is located in Kwara state. A long war took place between the Fulani and Yoruba of Oyo in Ilorin (1817-1837) to seize the town of Ilorin. Neighbouring kings sided with Oyo to prevent the spread of Islam. Some provincial chiefs such as Onikoyi and Solaberu were involved in the war. Its population is 778,000

 

WARRI

It is located in Delta state. It was the administrative capital of the southern protectorate during the colonial era. It was a major local and international trading hub for palm oil. The ethnic groups mostly in warri are Igbos, Itshekiri and Ijaw who are mainly Christians. Its population is estimated at 500,000
