INTRODUCTION

The teacher revises the previous lesson and introduces the new topic by Explaining what countable and uncountable noun is

Countable nouns are those nouns that

i. we can count

ii. make plural by adding ‘s’, ‘es’, ‘ies’ etc

iii. can be used with the indefinite articles a/an

 

Uncountable nouns are those nouns that cannot be

i. counted

ii. used with ‘s’, ‘es’, ‘ies’ etc to make their plural

We make their plurals by changing them into items of measurement e.g bags, packets, gallon etc

A Boy – some boys

A Girl – some girls

A Table – some tables

A Cup – some cups

Uncountable nouns

A bucket of Water

A gallon of Oil

A packet of Sugar

A tin of Milk

A pinch of Salt

 

NOTE: for countable nouns, use ‘a’, ‘some’, ‘many’, ‘few’ and ‘a few’

For example

A boy

A cup

Some bags

Some cups

 

While for uncountable nouns use ‘some’, ‘less’, ‘a little’, and ‘little’

For example

Some water

Some milk

A little sugar

A little salt

Less sugar

Less water
