SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES: At the end of the lesson, the pupil should be able to

1) Explain Traditional Dance

2)Identify Traditional dance in Nigeria e.g Gada, Bata, Atilogwu etc

3)Discuss the different occasions of performing them.

INSTRUCTIONAL TECHNIQUES: Identification, explanation, playword, method, questions and answers, demonstration.

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIAL: Audio visual resources: Instrument e.g drums, gong, shakers, wooden drum, clappers etc.

STEP 1

INTRODUCTION

The Teacher defines Traditional dance as Dances or dance form that have arisen out of the tradition of a people, such as folk dance of indigenous peoples of Africa, Europe or other areas.

She explains that there are dances indigenous to Nigeria of different ethnic group. She explains that some of these dances are done during ceremonies like burials, coming of age ceremony, birth of a new child and many more

She uses Instrument like drum, Televisions, DVD player to teach the pupil some of the Nigerian Traditional dance.

NOTE

Nigeria Traditional Dance are Indigenous to various ethnic groups in Nigeria. They include

  1. Atilogwu Dance- This is a traditional youth dance from the Igbo ethnic group of Nigeria. It focuses on vigorous body movement and often includes acrobatic flips, jumps and so on
  2. Sharo dance- This is a popular Traditional dance from the Northern part of Nigeria mainly among the Hausa and Fulani people. It is categorised as a dance of rite passage from adulthood into married life where the most fit man in the community takes the most beautiful lady in the community as bride
  3. Bata dance- This is Popular among the Yoruba people of south western Nigeria. It can be performed as a part of festival or dance performance or use to dethrone or enthrone a king or at cultural festival.

    Other Traditional dances in Nigeria include- the Koroso, Nkwa umuagbogho, ikpirikpi ogu dance and many more.
