An indigene is a native of a place
ANIOMA PEOPLE
They are Igbo people located in Delta state. The acronym ‘ANIOMA’ was derived from the four original local governments:
“M” and “A” are common denominators found in the four original local governments. The oinaage was made by cjief Dennis Osadebey in 1951.
The Anioma people have rich oil deposits especially in Ndokwa LGA. They speak dialects derived from the Igbo language
IJAW PEOPLE
They are situated in Delta state. They are the fourth largest ethnic group in Nigeria.
They rely on fishing and scattered farmlands in the swampy area. Since the 20th century, the Ijaw people struggled to have the centre of Nigeria’s petroleum in their community.
OGONI PEOPLE
They are located in Rivers state. They depend solely on agriculture and fishing for their economic survival. Commercial quantities of petroleum were discovered in the 1950s in their land.
Ogoni land lay on the slave route from the hinterland to the coastal slave markets however no Ogoni man or woman was taken as a slave. Marriage with a neighbour, except the Ibibio, was forbidden by Ogoni customs and tradition.
The British forces arrived in Ogoniland in 1901 and due to vast cultural differences, there was a huge resistance which led to wars till they wer finally subjugated in 1914.
Despite the introduction of Christianity, the Ogonis still held unto their cultures and traditions till date.
The Ogoni land and rivers are very important to the Ogoni people as it provided not just food for them but they are also blived to be gods therefor worshipped as such.
The annual festival of the Ogoni people is held during the period of the yam harvest.
