SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES: At the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to

  1. Explain the component of civic education
  2. Discuss where and how civic education takes place
  3. Identify suspicious persons and activities in school and at home
  4. Highlight what to do in case of any suspected movement in school and at home
  5. List and explain the importance of culture in Nigeria
  6. Mention the effects on foreign culture on Nigerian culture

The teacher explains how to identify suspicious movements or persons

Identifying Suspicious Persons and Activities

1. Someone screaming or shouting for help.

2. Unusual noises (breaking glass, pounding, gunshots)

3. Property being taken out of student rooms or class rooms that are closed.

4. Expensive property being carried out of a building, especially at unusual hours.

5.  Vehicle driving slowly, and   aimlessly, back and forth on a street or in a parking lot

6.   Anyone being forced into a vehicle

7.  Someone running from a vehicle, building or area while carrying property, computers, furniture, luggage

8.  Any abandoned vehicles on campus

9.  Someone hanging around bike racks

10. Someone looking into building windows or windows of parked vehicles, or trying to open them

11. Any form of vandalism, such as spray painting a sign or building; graffiti; removing benches or signs; pulling up or removing plants and shrubbery

12.  Recently broken doors or windows

13. A tense situation that’s about to blow up (fighting, threatening, verbally abusive behavior)

14. Any emergency, such as an accident, a fire, a critically ill or injured person

15.  A person staggering about, appearing intoxicated, disoriented, or in need of medical attention

16.  Anything “unusual” in the area you are in

1. Remain calm

2. Keep away from the suspicious person(s) or activity

3.  Avoid taking any risks

4  Notify the Police immediately

1.   Our cultures help us gain valuable information about our ancestry.

2.   When we study about the roots of our cultures and follow them accordingly, we get to know about ourselves much better.

3.   Studying about our cultures and of the entire world`s is extremely interesting and it gives us some enlightenment about ancient times.

4.   Following a culture instills moral values in us.

5.   Cultural traditions keep us disciplined. Every culture has certain norms and laws laid down, which if followed leads to peaceful existence.

6.   Detailed study about every aspect of our culture can give us profound knowledge.

7.   Every culture teaches us to co-exist with all the other cultures in the world.

8.   Cultures teach us the real meaning of life.

9.   Cultural traditions were made by our experienced ancestors who wanted to pass on their valued knowledge about life to every generation of mankind henceforth, to make their survival easier.

10.                 Cultural traditions teach us to be responsible human beings.

 

She further highlights the effects of foreign culture on Nigerian culture

1. In dressing, foreign wears have displaced all the local and native attires

2. In the music scene, the foreign style has almost displaced the traditional style though Nigerians have managed to mix both of them together to produce afro beats and its counterparts

3. When it comes to language, English is the lingua franca here in Nigeria, the local and native languages are so despised that speaking it in school may get you beaten or fined

4. Foreign food is not prominent in Nigeria, probably the most prominent of such is ice cream, some snacks and maybe bread
