Topic: Common sight words- spellings, reading, filling the gaps and writing. Simple comprehension passage.

Content:   Adjectives. Past tense.

Specific Objectives: At the end of the lesson, the pupils should be able to

  1. Pronounce, spell, read and write common sight words
  2. Identify and use adjectives in making sentences
  3. Correctly use the past tense
  4. Read and answer questions from a simple comprehension passage

Instructional Material: Letter charts, charts of common sight words, charts showing adjectives definition and examples, charts on the correct use of the past tense, comprehension passage

Instructional Techniques: Repetition, explanation, demonstration, question and answers 

Entry Behaviour: The pupils can identify verbs and its examples  

Set Induction: The teacher uses alphabet rhyme to arouse them

Periods I-II: Common sight words

The teacher reviews the previously taught sight words and introduces the topic as common sight words.

 

She explains that sight words are words that cannot be pronounced with the sound of the letters

The pupils repeat after her

She writes out the common sight words on the board

She then proceeds to spelling and pronouncing them repeatedly

The pupils repeat after her

 

Evaluation:

  1. The teacher dictates the words ‘friend, sister, mother, rough’ for the pupils to write down in their notes
  2. Fill in the missing gaps

Conclusion: She marks their books and corrects them where it is necessary.

Periods III- IV: Adjectives, Past tense

The teacher revises the previous lesson on common sight words

 

The pupils read

The teacher proceeds to explaining that an adjective is a word describing the a person, animal, thing, place or thought

For example

1. We saw a lovely dog on our walk

2. It was a very hot day in April

3. The brown dog ran across the road

The teacher reviews past tense with the pupils. She explains that any event that has already happened is called past tense. She writes some examples on the board.

b. I walked to school this morning

c. I jumped over the fence

 

 

Evaluation:         1. Circle the adjectives in the list below

  1. Underline the past tense in these sentences
  2. I did my home work yesterday
  3. I walked to school this morning
  4. I jumped over the fence

Conclusion: The teacher marks their books, corrects where necessary and commends them positively

Periods V: Simple comprehension passage

Fluffy the Cat

Fluffy is a cat.

She likes to play

Fluffy can jump very high

 

She proceeds to read the passage repeatedly as the pupils repeat after her.

The pupils participate and listen

 

Evaluation:        

Answer the following questions

  1. What kind of animal is fluffy? (dog, cat)
  2. What does she like to do? (run, jump)
  3. What can Fluffy do? (jump high, walk)

Conclusion: The teacher marks their books, corrects where necessary and commends them positively
