NOTE

PROPAGATION

Propagation simply means reproduction.

Some conditions necessary for the germination of seeds are

  1. adequate air
  2. viable seed
  3. optimum temperature
  4. adequate moisture

SEXUAL PROPAGATION

Sexual propagation involves the union of the pollen (male) with the egg (female) to produce a seed. The seed is made up of three parts: the outer seed coat, which protects the seed; the endosperm, which is a food reserve; and the embryo, which is the young plant itself.

ADVANTAGES OF SEXUAL PROPAGATION

  1. seeds are cheap to get
  2. seeds can be stores for a long time
  3. seeds are easy to move and transport
  4. seeds are convenient to handle
  5. crop population is easily obtained through seeds

DISADVATNAGES OF SEXUAL PROPAGATION

  1. some seeds produce plants that doesn’t resemble the parent plant
  2. some seeds produce low yield in their first year
  3. plants grown from seeds take a long time to mature and produce fruits
  4. The plants from seeds don’t grow, mature and yield uniformly

EVALUATION:    1. Define

  1. Propagation
  2. sexual propagation
  3. State the advantages and disadvantages of sexual                    propagation
